(In)courage Review and 50 Dollar Giftcard G1veaway (01/06) #indeals

I hope everyone had a very merry Christmas and holiday season! I'm enjoying the break from teaching and school (although I am preparing for some oral exams, so there's always more work to do!).

I was wishing this year for a way to make Christmas a little more meaningful for my family. I didn't want it to just be about gifts and getting presents, but also about giving, helping others, and to get back to the religious core of the holiday. That's why I was so excited to receive the Advent Tabletop Devotion Calendar from (In)courage from the Love Came Down Collection.

Would you like to WIN $50 to (in)courage plus FREE SHIPPING? Read on for my review and more details.

Natural Insect Repellant from Tropical Traditions

Biting bugs really bug me. I don't like it when they bite me or my babies, but I have a really hard time using insect repellants that are full of harmful, toxic chemicals. Even if I just apply these "regular" repellants to myself, I worry that they may be transferred to my children.

Mosquitoes especially were a big problem for my family last summer when my daughter was under six months old. There was no way I was going to douse either of us with DEET--and so we stayed inside a lot. Chasing fireflies with my toddler also became a challenge because when the fireflies are out, so are the mosquitoes. And how can I trust a label that says I need to wash the product off as soon as I get inside? That is not something I want to use.

So I have been searching high and low for a safe and natural alternative to the typical insect repellants out there. I was so happy to come across the Organic Insect Repellant and Moisturizer from Tropical Traditions. I knew immediately that this was a product I wanted to feature on my blog to share with all of you.

The first thing that I noticed about the Organic Insect Repellant is

Target Employees Harass Breastfeeding Mother: Nurse-in Scheduled

More ignorance regarding breastfeeding! Recently, Michelle Hickman was Christmas shopping in a Target store when she needed to nurse her infant. She moved to a secluded location near the dressing rooms and proceeded to nurse with the cover of a blanket. While no other shoppers even noticed that she was nursing her baby there, two Target employees repeatedly asked her to move and made threatening statements about being ticketed for indecent exposure. Other employees looked on and made disapproving gestures about her actions.

A call to Target headquarters fared no better and she was told by the customer service representative that Target was a family friendly place. Apparently they do not understand that nursing IS one of the most family-friendly practices around, with many benefits to mother, baby, and society. (Some of which include protection from illnesses, protection from diseases such as breast cancer, protection from post-partum depression, and a high correlation with higher IQ levels in children.)

In response to Target's failure to support breastfeeding, Hickman has organized a nurse-in to take place at Target locations across the country on Wednsday, December 28 at 10am. If you are interested in joining in and supporting the cause, you can learn more about the event from the Facebook Group here.

WW: Bellagio's New Songs {Linky}

We are in Las Vegas for Christmas! No, not because we love to party (in fact, we don't gamble or drink alcohol ever), but because this is where my husband's family lives. It's rare for us to go to The Strip, but we made a special trip today to see the Bellagio's new fountain shows with new songs. We also saw the flower gardens inside the Bellagio. It was a fun evening out with the family (kids stayed home with grandma). The songs from tonight were all Christmas music. Out of the four fountain sows we saw, one was Sleigh Ride and one was The Hallelujah Chorus from The Messiah. (The juxtaposition of the sin of Vegas with the music about praising Jesus was hard for my mind to handle!)

Kindle Touch ***Giveaway*** from Clean Teen Reads and My Blog (11/26-12/12)

Would you like to win a Kindle Touch to give as a Christmas gift—or to keep for yourself?, a website that provides detailed reviews of books for teens and tweens, has connected with nine great blogs to promote its updated site and give away a Kindle Touch!

Prizes: Win a $99 Kindle Touch or one of five subscriptions to Clean Teen Reads, a website that provides detailed reviews of clean books for teens.

Please enter using the Rafflecopter form below. Comments on this blog post will not count as entries. You only need to enter on one of the sites, as the form is the same on all sites. See the Official Rules at the end of the Rafflecopter form.

Here is what you need to know about the wonderful website

I do not want my children watching things on TV or in movies that are crude, violent, or scary. The same goes for what they read. Now that they're little, it's easy to decide what's clean and what's not. But what about when they turn 10+? It's so hard to know what teen/tween books contain offensive material--and many do! That's why I love the website Clean Teen Reads (which can be found at and

Clean Teen Reads provides FREE reviews of teen and tween literature and rates the books according to many potentially concerning factors including violence, physical relationships, witchcraft, language, etc. I know that not every parent is worried about all of these topics, but Clean Teen Reads covers a range of topics in great detail so that the reviews can be useful to all parents.

Both parents and teens can use the site for free, and parents and teens read separate reviews which are tailored to the group. Most of the reviews are for new books, although some classics are also reviewed. Subscriptions are also available to adults and the subscription unlocks additional search options.

I think that the reviews are really cleverly written. In fact, the review on Robinson Crusoe made the book sound so intriguing that I got it as a Christmas present later that year! (And I enjoyed the book very much.) Now I am very happy to help promote the updated website by hosting this Amazon Kindle Giveaway!

Please use the Rafflecopter form below to enter. Good luck!

The pack includes 15 Sticker Labels, 40 Slimline Sticker Labels, 12 Shoe Labels, 6 Large Clothing Dots, 6 medium Clothing Dots, 12 Small Clothing Dots, and 2 mini Metal Tags. This is a great pack with all of the variety you will need to label your child's items. Approximate value 24.99.

When I received my package of Lovable Labels to try out I was impressed by their professional look and by their packaging (they come in a booklet). I really appreciate being able to keep them together and organized. Right away I stuck a clothing dot on the inside of my son's backpack/suitcase. The label was really impressive in that there were no edges peeling up or issues with the sticker on the material. The clothing stickers can be washed and won't come off! I was also really excited to receive the metal tags, which will help my son be able to open and close his backpack in addition to identifying it at school.

Finally, I was excited to learn that the Sticker Labels and Slimline Sticker Labels are microwave and dishwasher safe. That is a must at our house. I plan on labeling some of our sippy cups that get taken to parks and play-dates. Loveable Label also sells labels for identifying your children's allergies.

I am very excited about having Loveable Labels in our home. They are a high quality product and I can't wait to order another pack! I recommend Loveable Labels for all your labeling needs.

Vampire Power: Draining the Earth's Resources

Halloween is over and there are still vampires hanging around! (And I'm talking about more than Twilight/Breaking Dawn, here!) These vampries are the kind that suck your electricity, not your blood.

Did you know that when your appliances and electronics are plugged in and not in use, they are still drawing power!? Many of our household items use a little power to stay in a standby mode (computers, for example), to be able to respond to a remote control (TVs, VCRs, DVD players, Blu-ray players, CD players, Radios, etc.), or to be able to respond to a communication instantly (printers, fax machines, phones with a separate base, etc.). But having these electronics plugged in all the time is actually very costly for the consumer and for the earth's resources.
It is estimated that the cost to consumers for all electricity for all vampire power in the USA is about

Most Embarrassing Moment

So the other day I was late to teach. I rushed to campus, got out of the car, looked down, and this is what I saw:

Seriously. Seriously!

I was wearing two totally different shoes! And I was already late and had no time to go home and change. (And no back-ups in the car.)

Here's what happened: at home, Little J had been tormenting playing with Baby E. In order to distract him away from her, I asked him to help me choose some shoes. I was going to wear the brown plaid loafers (on the left), and he wanted me to wear the black patent leather heels (on the right). He wouldn't drop it, so I put on the black shoe to appease him, and figured I would just change it later when he wasn't watching. Apparently I forgot. Nice.

So yes, I did teach two German classes like this. Now I have a newest embarrassing moment. (It was a good opportunity to review commands and the present perfect in German though, as I recounted to my students what Little J had said.)

Well, thanks for visiting my not-so-wordless Wednesday! Please leave a comment and link up. :-)

Happy Wednesday,

3.50 for 30 Dollars of Reusable Cloth Sandwich Bags at Plum District!

Did you know that over 1 million plastic bags are used every minute? With how many plastic bags we use and how slowly they degrade (1,000 years!), finding an alternative to plastic bags is really important. Plastic sandwich bags are also a repeating household expense. Because they are costly and bad for the earth, we need an alternative!

That's why I have been wanting to get into reusable cloth sandwich baggies for a long time. I can't believe we're not using them already! If you are looking to try them with me, or need to bulk up your stash, head on over to Plum District to get a great deal on reusable snack and sandwich bags!

1. The regular deal is "Spend $15, get $30" worth of reusable bags
2. If you are new to Plum District, you will get a free $5 credit just for signing up!
3. This week you will earn $5 Plum Dollars for every Plum Deal purchased Monday 11/14/11 12am PT through 11/18/11 11:59pm PT (not Plum Steals though) (as stated on the Plum District blog)
4.  Use Plum District coupon code "fabulous" to receive 10% off your order. (One-time use only).

To recap, that means you're spending $8.50, earning $5 to use later, and getting $30 worth of reusable Sandwich bags in return. That's essentially $3.50! What a great deal!

Woohoo! I'm super excited for these. (Can you tell from all of my exclamation points?) I love saving money on green items for my home!

Happy Baggies,

Waste Not: Freezing Vegetables Without Blanching

As we begin to celebrate Thanksgiving, a new study reveals that about half of all food in America is wasted. That number includes food waste from restaurants, families, grocery stores, etc. Did you know that 14%-25% of the food that enters American households gets thrown out? We waste almost a quarter of our food!

Throwing out food is a waste of money and is bad for the environment. Food decomposing in landfills is a contributor to global warming! Of course we should buy only what we need and use the food that we buy. We can also compost our food scraps instead of contributing to landfill waste. But those are posts for another day. Today I am writing about what we can do with the extra food in our homes before it goes bad. Today, let's talk about freezing vegetables without blanching.
